Wow, that was really good. I'm at work so I can't say much now, but I'm with librathree in that I don't usually like stories built around songs. But you use the Joni Mitchell songs very effectively, and you don't overdo the quotes (maybe that's what I don't like about songfics, that the writers often use the songs to do all the work).
I once started writing a story (never finished) in which, in one scene, Hutch was trying to decide whether to play Joni Mitchell or Billie Holiday, so I agree with you that Hutch would have listened to a lot of Joni when he was in a certain mood.
