Hmm. You've never seen any of Joss Whedon's work. I'd encourage you to try it. If nine years of Buffy is too daunting, maybe start with Firefly. There were only 14 episodes and a movie, and it's such good stuff.

Don't be scared of Veronica Mars' high school setting either. The first season of that show, for me, is the best single season of television =ever=. I swear to god, I'm not overselling it. Scout's honor! :-)

I'm actually even using Firefly/Serenity in a class I'm teaching. He's a master at character development. Those he creates are allowed to breathe and grow in ways you don't often see on TV.
