Drabble - Supernatural - for Callisto . . .

This one is actually a triple drabble, cuz Bobby has a lot to say. Not really spoilerish, but taken from the mood of Bobby during the finale.

Families

They don’t know Bobby often sits all night in his car, watching the door of whatever fleabag hotel they’ve flopped. They think he’s back on the farm, making calls, chasing leads. Fighting the fight. They don’t know he’s fighting right outside their door. He’s lost count of the “visitors” he’s ganked so they can catch up on the precious shut eye they need for the ones he misses.  First asked by their father, then compelled by his sons. “Protect them,” John would say and disappear into the mist like a fucking ghost.

 

Bobby would peek in sometimes when they were younger. Watch Dean try to be brave, turn away when Sam couldn’t stop crying because of the nightmares. Curse at anyone and everyone who allowed those boys to grow up like this. Like ghosts. Walking in the footsteps of their father, when they should be walking school hallways, walking big yellow dogs. Walking away from what they never asked for.

 

He almost took them once. John hadn’t been around for months, Dean had started stealing 12-packs and cigarettes, and Sam stopped going to school. Bobby showed up one night with warm clothes and new shoes and was about to knock when he heard their voices. Happy, excited, chattering away like, well, like kids. He peeked in the window and there was John, sitting on the bed, cleaning his piece. At his feet, Sam built a giant starship out of a new set of Legos and Dean, his shoulder glued to his father’s, mimicked every stroke of the cloth against the barrel of his brand new gun. Bobby left the shoes on the steps. He knew it was too late. For all of them.

 

That night, he killed three monsters while his sons, wrapped in the arms of their father, slept.

And do you think Bobby knew about Adam? (Or at least, about his mother and John?)

well I don't think he's literally their father, but . . . he's acted like one . . . I don't know about Adam - but I bet Bobby knew . . . things to think and plots to dream up!

I know that was a silly question, tacked up at the end of a 48-hour workday (!) I totally understood the meaning and thought it was a perfect Supernatural-style ending, that after all Bobby did for those kids, they still idolized their flawed father.

Your idea also solves a bit of a puzzle about how it is that Bobby appears en scene so quickly whenever needed.

Oh wow, I love this. I'm newly in love with Bobby after the finale, and this just made me happy inside.

I'd love to read a story where that happened. Sad, how much better off they might have been with Bobby.

Oh thank you for this!Walking in the footsteps of their father, when they should be walking school hallways, walking big yellow dogs. Walking away from what they never asked for. This is what you do so well, this whole words as a painting thing.. be still my heart but this is lovely, girl. Such a sweet, quiet, totally convincing picture of Bobby here.

And I'm still relatively spoiler free for the finale, but I think my dire prediction didn't pan out, right? Judging from the lack of howls..*g*

love the image that they grew up "as ghosts" - wonderfully sad and creepy. And I think we can all officially start squeaping "oh Bobby" now he's had a meltdown *g* And uh ... I think you should write the Bobby story, you know, the one you definitely want to ;)

Thanks for reading! I always see them as ghosts - since no one really remembers they're alive except hunters and demons . . . and yes, I plan on trying a full size bobby epic!
