Was bored and in pain at work and decided to try to write an angsty awful drabble to keep my mind off my back and the fact that I accidentally got myself stuck in an actual nine to five job.

And then the first line just whacked me over the head and I HAD to do it.
Got it down to a drabble and a half . . . not really cheating, right?!

thanks to susan, title queen, for the title. And a shout out again to Sal for the amazing icon.
My words so close to Hutch's lips . . . can I get a whoop whoop?

I was okay until they handed me his shoes. Blue splattered in red. Tried to wipe it off, but only smudged it deeper. Into the stripes. Into my hands. Stumbled back into the chair as a hundred images threatened to finish the job started this morning with the scraping of a fender and the echo of a shout.

I stared at the frayed laces and thought about those shoes. Up on the desk.  Propped on the dashboard. Headed down an alley. Snugged on my lap. Even when Jeeters slashed a two-inch gash in the left one, he wouldn’t give them up. Said they made him run faster. Jump higher. Said they were lucky.

Didn’t even realize what I was doing until they were laced, my brown loafers discarded on top of the latest People magazine, my feet pinched, already howling.

Figured we could use all the luck we could get.

I'm normally not a fan of drabbles. They're too short and don't do enough for me.

This one is different, though. I could see the imagery flashing in my head as I read. I saw Huch sitting in a chair with those shoes in his lap fingering the laces. I even heard Starsky in my head talking about those shoes, too.

Great piece of work here. Thanks for sharing.

Cool story!

Now from your Journal, which won't let me reply, here's a bit of experience talking to you:
Did the pregnancy come before or after you & your guy got "engaged"? I sure hope the pregnancy isn't WHY you got engaged -- wrong reason for sure!

I couldn't even handle being MARRIED at 18, much less could I have handled a child. If you aren't morally opposed to it, I'd get the abortion and either wait about 10 years to have kids, or make Mr. Right get "fixed" so there are no more "accidents".

Whatever you do, don't have it and KEEP it out of guilt!!!

okay, so thanks for reading the drabble, but I have no idea what you are talking about. Do you have me confused with someone else? I surely hope so. Haven't seen 18 years in . . . oh . . . 18 years or so . . .

Kaye,
I love drabbles and this one was showing exactly Hutch's feelings looking at Starsk'y sneakers. Then his reaction...very gripping.

I like this!

I especially like the way the second last line ends with "howling" - which could almost be taken literally instead of figuratively, given his state of mind.

Terrific drabble-thingy!

Great story, Kaye
Full of pain and angst and so realistic.
Eat your heart out Amy, you haven't got a clue!

So very sorry! I don't know that I should even be using LJ. I get so confused it's awful. I'm surprised I can even find my OWN homepage sometimes.
